The end of the World Cup
Jul. 9th, 2006 06:26 pmThe World Cup is over... which means life will get back to some sense of normality. In the past four weeks, I've watched more sports TV than I normally do in a year. Even at work, which normally is full of people working hard and where even chatting is frowned upon, we've had colleagues from all nationalities abandon work and crowd around the big-screen TVs. I fear the news will soon swing back to the right-wing agenda and the run-up to yet another war (Iran? North Korea?).
I guess everybody watching the final must have been shocked by Zidane's red card. What a sad way to end a great career. I really wonder what the Italian player must have said to get Zidane so angry. Heidi and I both think it must have been an awful racial remark, but I guess we'll never know. The poor man probably spent the next hour kicking himself for losing his temper and the chance to win the game. Let's see what the French press has to say tomorrow - I hope the French like their heroes human and flawed and treat him gentle.
