Bubbette and I go out to see a movie every two weeks or so. If the movie is good, Heidi will join us; but since Bub and I tend to enjoy action, vampire and science fiction movies, it's usually just the two of us.

Yesterday we went to see Night Watch (Nochnoi Dozor), a Russian vampire flick. Some part were well done (it was a relief to see that evil wasn't dressed up as orcs and goblins), some parts incomprehensible but probably meaningful to Russians (operating somebody on a desk instead of the larger conference table), and other parts were incoherent due to visible cuts (probably scenes removed in the US release). All in all, just the kind of movie we were looking for...

Now to the subtitles. The movie wasn't dubbed, and the subtitles were very well done. I'm not talking about the translation - that sucked in places. No, the subtitles were creatively done - sometimes blood red in the middle of the screen, then dissolving as in water; sometimes starting on the bottom left and then, as more words were added the the bottom right, fading at the left hand side; and sometimes normal subtitles but at a random dark patch of the screen instead of the bottom of the screen.

I'm not sure it's a good thing that the subtitles were the most memorable part of the movie - apart from that, it ranked between, say, Catwoman and Constantine. (I hope it's obvious that we go and see crappy movies - and enjoy them, too.)
